Unlike past Nintendo consoles, the Nintendo Switch is home to tons of high-quality third-party games. Fortnite, The Witcher 3, Skyrim, and even Doom are playable on the usually family-friendly console. Now, it seems like Blizzard’s Overwatch might join that list.
Overwatch matches the Nintendo aesthetic with its bright color palette and emphasis on teamwork, so it seems like a no-brainer. The Switch is already home to colorful shooters like Splatoon, Fortnite, and even Overwatch competitor Paladins. While nothing has been confirmed, it seems odd to sell an officially licensed case for a game not even on the console, and odder still for the post to be removed.
Overwatch has been an incredibly successful title for Blizzard since its release during the summer of 2016, and Blizzard has been instrumental in developing a strong e-sports scene. Besides being an incredibly solid and fun team shooter, the game is also known for having an inclusive community with heroes representing many different cultures and ethnicities. The game has amassed over 40 million players according to statistica.com, and that number could climb even higher following a Switch release. The Nintendo Switch has sold approximately 35 million units, making it Nintendo’s third-best home console in terms of sales.
Fans have been clamoring for a Switch release of Overwatch for some time now. Blizzard has even discussed the possibility of porting Overwatch to the Switch in the past, but has downplayed the likelihood, citing the difficulty to maintain balance and patches over so many platforms.
It wouldn’t be the first time Blizzard released one of their games to the Switch. Diablo 3 was ported to the handheld console last year to generally positive reception.
PAX West starts this Friday and runs through the weekend, so it’s likely we’ll hear more about this then. Barring that, rumors suggest a Nintendo Direct will be held in September. Until then, Overwatch is only playable on PC, Xbox One, and Playstation 4.
