Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter doesn’t believe that Nintendo NX will hit its intended March 2017 release date, and could end up being delayed to mid-2017.
He also believes that PlayStation 4 Neo could release around the same time, anywhere between March-June 2017, rather than the late 2016 window widely expected.
Speaking to Gamertag Radio about the NX’s absence from E3, Pachter explained: “I think if they [Nintendo] were ready to launch the NX in March, they could have shown it here [at E3]. I don’t think they’re going to be ready. If we don’t get an announcement on NX and we [don’t] see specs by August or September, I don’t think there’s a chance it comes out by March.
“If they show something in August or September maybe you’ll get it. I think that’s a summer [2017] launch. So I actually think you’re gonna see PlayStation Neo and NX right about the same time, mid-year 2017.”
Pachter preceded the conversation about NX with a similar theory about Neo, explaining: “You don’t have a company in the gaming space that is better equipped to launch hardware than Sony. They’ve been making consumer electronics for 70 years. I think the fact that we didn’t see Neo here means it probably isn’t coming out this holiday.
“I think if it was coming out this holiday, it’s already in fabrication, they’ve already got the components made, and you would actually know, so I think, no. I think they’re going to launch [PlayStation] VR in October, Neo probably in March, April, May, June, sometime next year, probably ahead of the holidays.
“It’s easier to manage a product launch in mid-year because you don’t have gift givers buying it, so you don’t have quite as big of a demand and you can actually satisfy demand from the fanboys. So I think it’s probably an early next year launch, and I think that’s why Microsoft announced Scorpio.”
Nintendo has previously announced plans to launch NX in March, but hasn’t yet confirmed a release date for Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game is, however, expected to launch on Wii U and Nintendo NX simultaneously.
A release date for PlayStation Neo hasn’t been confirmed either, although rumours suggest it could be due to launch later this year.
