Pacific Rim 2 is back on track after Legendary Pictures set Steven S. DeKnight, creator of the wonderfully OTT Spartacus TV series, as director on the giant robots sequel. Pacific Rim 2 will mark DeKnight’s motion picture directorial debut.

DeKnight will take over the franchise began by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham in 2013. The film failed to earn mega bucks in the US, taking only $101 million, but worldwide managed to earn $411. Pacific Rim had a production budget of $190 million.

DeKnight is best known as the creator of Starz’s Spartacus series – which was amazing and I won’t hear a bad word said about it. He also worked as head writer and exec producer on Daredevil for Netflix and earlier worked on Buffy, Angel and Smallville.

Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro and Mary Parent are producing and Jillian Share will be executive producer on the sequel.

Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D.

Back in September Pacific Rim 2 was removed from was the release calendar and its future uncertain, but it now appears to be all systems go.

At this time it’s not clear if any of the first film’s cast – Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Robert Kazinsky – will be returning for the sequel.
