William Stillwell, the manager of Microsoft’s Mixed Reality program, has suggested that Xbox Series X developers will find ways to work around the PS5’s advantage in SSD technology. “I understand that it’s a marketing point and a high point – and I think I said in the last podcast we did, I’m really impressed with what they’ve done in the architecture with their drive and I think they’ll be able to do really cool stuff with it,” says Stillwell in an interview with Iron Lords Podcast regarding the PS5’s SSD technology....

Everyone’s favorite fully evolved Gen I starter is Charizard, right? Well, what if we told you that every Gen I Pokémon could be Charizard? Pokémon Home launched this month and with it, the return of the ability for trainers to complete a full Pokédex. Game Freak removed that ability from its games for the first time in the series’ history via Sword and Shield. That was met with backlash unlike anything the developers will have ever seen, although it didn’t affect the games’ sales once they had eventually been released....

Niantic has announced the advent of the Lunar New Year in Pokémon Go, and with it comes the debut of Minccino and Darumaka, a rush of red Pokémon, and increased likelihood of encountering Shinies (via Polygon). The event begins on January 24 at 9.00pm GMT and ends on February 3 at 9.00pm GMT. Herds of Charmeleon, Corphish, Flareon, Foongus, and other red-coloured Pokémon will be found in the wild, and there is even a chance to catch a red Shiny Gyarados in the overworld, too....

It’s been announced during Inside Xbox at Gamescom that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will soon have cross-play for PS4 and Xbox One owners. Cross-play testing will begin in September, with the feature becoming available for everyone in early October. While Sony was originally staunchly against cross-play with other systems, it has finally given in and started to welcome cross-play between the PS4 and other consoles, starting with Fortnite. PUBG is the latest multiplayer title to take advantage of this new stance....

Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley has told VideoGamer that he doesn’t know anything more about the Nintendo NX than anybody else, despite rumours suggesting that the console could go on sale as early as this year. Speaking to us last week, Kingsley praised Nintendo for creating “incredible hardware”, but said that he would have to wait and see what the NX actually is before pledging his company’s support. “Nintendo are brilliant,” Kingsley said....

Registration is now open for the beta for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III. It’s an open beta running from 10AM PST (6PM BST) on Friday April 21 until the same time the following Monday, April 24. Ron Gilbert’s upcoming Return to Monkey Island will have an easy mode, at least of sorts. Chatting to Ars Technica, the creator revealed a hint system will be included in the upcoming release. “[One thing] that people really want in games today are built-in hint systems,” Gilbert explained, retconning his previous desires to shun any such mechanic. “If [players] don’t have a built-in hint system, they’re just going to jump over to the web and… read a walkthrough”...

Risk of Rain developer Hopoo Games sure loves its pranks. For the fifth anniversary marking the launch of the original Risk of Rain, the company announced the sequel has been canceled. Of course, it was a joke (haha, GOTTEM). Instead, the sensationally wacky developer that’s hip with the kids dropped some new information, as well as a release window for Risk of Rain 2. First off, Hopoo has confirmed that melee classes will return for the sequel....

A new trailer for forthcoming monster battler Palworld has been released, which looks as bizarre as ever. From Japanese studio Pocketpair, the Pokémon-inspired game is a “multiplayer, open-world survival crafting game” according to the Steam page. Your Poké… sorry, Pals, can fight, build, farm, and (pretty cruelly) work in factories. The latest trailer shows all this in action as you explore a bright, vibrant world and evolve the Pals into new forms, before grabbing a machine gun and mowing down enemies....

Parasite Eve has been trademarked in Europe by publisher Square Enix (via Gematsu), suggesting a revival of the classic horror franchise may be on the cards. Probably not, but we live in hope.
