The game has sold over 10 million copies since its launch in February of 2017 and, if it actually becomes available for PC, will mark a first for Sony where PS4 exclusives are concerned.
Sony previously revealed it was willing to consider releasing first-party titles to other platforms in order to reach a wider audience. The statement was made by former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden following news of the company’s intention to purchase Spider-Man creators Insomniac Games.
“We must support the PlayStation platform - that is nonnegotiable,” he said in the August 2019 interview. “That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”
Layden stepped down from his position in October after spending 30 years with Sony.
As for Horizon Zero Dawn, it’s been reported the game will become available on Steam and the Epic Games Store this year. The information is understood to have come from three individuals who are “familiar with Sony’s plans.”
Said sources did not reveal their identities as they were not given permission to speak to any media outlets in relation to those plans.
