It will soon be possible for console gamers to take to the fantasy high seas, as Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Ultimate Edition is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was a direct sequel to Pillars of Eternity, which was a spiritual successor to the old Black Isle games, like Baldur’s Gate. Deadfire took the series in a new direction, as the castles and dungeons of the first game were replaced with ships and islands, as the Watcher from the first game is reborn on the high seas and is caught up in a plot involving the return of the god of light.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Ultimate Edition will contain all of the DLC from the base version of the game, including Beast of Winter, The Forgotten Sanctum, and Seeker, Slayer, Survivor. The whole package offers one of the lengthiest RPGs of the modern era, as the player is given an entire ocean full of monsters to battle, lost treasures to find, and different factions to discover.
It’s rare for RPGs to deal with the subject of pirates and exploring on the high seas, which might be partly due to how difficult it is to create random encounters based around ships without them becoming stagnant, as there are only so many sahaugin encounters that a party can deal with before it gets old. Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire was an excellent game that used its concept to the fullest and offered one of the most unique experiences for an RPG of its type, so it will be great to see it reach a larger audience on consoles.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Ultimate Edition will be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 28, 2020. The game will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in the future.
