Talk about being vague. Randomly in the middle of The Game Awards, the next Brendan Greene (a.k.a. PlayerUnknown) game was announced. Titled Prologue, the idea is that this may or may not be a prequel to PUBG. Is this finally the long-rumored story mode that players have wanted?

According to an interview published by Forbes, that’s not the case. One thing that Greene wants to make clear is that Prologue is “not PUBG 2.” In fact, Prologue isn’t even going to be a shooter. Since Greene stepped away from working on this hit battle royale title earlier this year, this trailer was more a message that he’s dedicated to creating something new.

Still, one has to wonder what that title is about. Considering Prologue means the pre-story, there’s still the chance that this will be the game that explains how PUBG started. Despite players not asking for a narrative, something had to cause the world of PUBG to fall into disarray. There were even rumors of a story mode coming to the project, though that was obviously dropped after the immense success of its multiplayer component.

For now, we just have this trailer and some words from Greene. “This is the first step in the journey for me,” Greene told Forbes. “We set up the studio and founded it with the goal of experimenting with new technology. Now we’re taking that first step towards building new technologies, and Prologue is the first step into the new world for us. I wanted the chance to deliver something new on a global scale.”

I can’t help but think this will be a survival game. The core concept of PUBG stems from games like DayZ and H1Z1. Considering those have their roots in survival, maybe Prologue will be about the first person to discover Erangel (PUBG’s first map). I could be linking it too much to Greene’s past, though.

Still, it takes some serious cajones to come onto The Game Awards and showcase a trailer with 30 seconds of a random forest. PlayerUnknown is a strong name in the gaming space and I guess we’re all talking now.
