As the mobile gaming scene begins to change - hopefully for the better - Playond is aiming to bring indie developers into the subscription service fold.
When video games first started to make a real impact on mobile platforms, it made for an exciting time. Since then, the landscape has been somewhat ruined by the “freemium” model, where companies offer games for free but then load them up with microtransactions. This “genre” has become so prevalent that even developers who despise it have no choice but to use it.
2019 might well have signaled the beginning of the end for freemium gaming, thanks to Apple and Google. Both have released gaming subscription services on their respective platforms, Apple Arcade and Google Play Pass. Since gamers are paying a monthly fee, the games included are free from microtransactions.
Since Apple and Google need to appeal to as many people as possible, most of the launch titles on both services come courtesy of bigger developers. That still leaves indie developers out in the cold, but that’s where Playond enters the fray. This subscription service option for mobile gamers is exclusively for indie developers and costs a fraction of the price of what Apple and Google are charging.
The best part about Playond is that anyone with an iOS device can try the service out for free. There are limitations on what the free service offers but if you enjoy it, the full service is currently being offered at the early bird price of just $0.99 per month. That’s 60 games, with more to come, for less than a buck a month. Plus, since it’s free to try, what are you waiting for? The worst that could happen is you don’t like it, so why not try it?
