Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially sold 100 million PlayStation 4 units worldwide, as shown in its consolidated financial results shared here. The console sold 3.2 million units in the first three months of this fiscal year, which pushes the 96.8 million total sold as of the last quarter to the tidy 100 million sales mark.
Game software sales increased from 40.6 million units to 42.9 million, with the proportion of digital download sales increasing to 53 per cent in this first quarter of 2019. Though still going strong, PlayStation Plus subscribers experienced a small dip in numbers from the last quarter of 2018 to the first three months of this fiscal year.
Senior Analyst at Niko Partners Daniel Ahmad confirmed that this ‘makes PlayStation 4 the fastest home console to reach 100 million unit sell in’, narrowly jumping ahead of the PlayStation 2 that took just two months longer to achieve the same numbers.
It is predicted by Sony Interactive Entertainment that another 15 million total console units will be sold in this current fiscal year, which is slightly less than its initial estimate of 16 million units. This adjustment could be due to the impending release of the PlayStation 5, which may touch down around summer next year.
