PlayStation VR launched too late to be included in Sony’s Q2 financial results – July to September – but CFO Kenichiro Yoshida assured investors that the launch of the new hardware had gone well, stating that sales “are on track”.
The period did include the launch of the slim PS4, which contributed to the 3.9 million PS4 units sold-in. The figure is marginally down on the four million units shipped in the same quarter of 2015.
Sony maintains its forecast of 20 million units in the year ending March 31, 2017.
The next quarter will also see the launch of PS4 Pro, which Yoshida describes as a “high value-added model”.
Back in May Sony announced it had sold 40 million PS4 systems to consumers, a figure which is believed to put the platform way ahead of the Xbox One. Microsoft doesn’t talk about Xbox One sales figures.
