It’s rare that Pokémon fans admit to not particularly being fond of a certain Pokémon, but Nebby is one that has divided opinions. This is one character you wouldn’t want as your pet, unless you want to frequently be frustrated to no end.
Nebby is a Cosmog Pokémon seen in the Sun and Moon game as the companion to Lillie. Its most recurring trait was to escape the bag in which Lillie had it stowed away in order to protect Nebby’s status as a legendary Pokémon. Nebby’s frequent escapes eventually turned it into a meme, and fans of Pokémon will agree the following 10 best represent their feelings about the character.
10 Genius Logic
Maybe Nebby should’ve used this genius logic a little more than it actually did in the game, as it would’ve saved us of several occasions when it got caught. In this meme, Nebby is shown becoming self-aware and hatching up a plan.
A little unsettling should be the sinister smile it has in place, which doesn’t look nearly as cute as it usually does when it has a more innocent expression on its face. Perhaps the follow-up feature with Nebby might employ this tactic and spare us needless scenes.
9 Cut To The Point
One of the more annoying traits of Nebby was the insistent “Pew” sounds it kept making. No matter what scene was involved, you could be certain this high-pitched sound would be accompanying the Pokémon. A lot of fans weren’t thrilled with this sound, which makes this meme very appropriate.
Rather than waste time and let Nebby go on with the “Pew” sound, which serves no purpose in the first place, Lillie takes a page out of Batman’s book and smacks Nebby to simply get in the bag. If she were shown doing this in the actual game, then you can bet there would’ve been a lot of applause from fans.
8 That’s Not What You Want To See
The last thing you want to do is make Nebby angry seeing as it’s supposed to be a powerful psychic Pokémon with a bunch of hidden powers. Considering Nebby was always seen being pushed into a bag, it makes sense it won’t be a fan of bags in general.
Here, Nebby is by no means amused when it lays eyes on a handbag advertisement; it’s not strictly the bags that has it flustered. The fact that the bags are 50% off is what’s getting Nebby triggered, since it knows the more bags for sale, the more chances it will have to get stuffed into one of them.
7 All Hail Ash
Although Ash Ketchum might be the source of many jokes at his expense, he did prove to be very capable in the Sun & Moon anime. Not only did he finally manage to win a tournament, Ash also snagged a Cosmog.
This version of Nebby wasn’t as flighty as the one seen in the game, which means that Ash is the first person to actually be able to tame one. Due to this, this meme has been made to prove that Ash might be the most badass character in Pokémon chronology.
6 Say “Pew” Again. I Double Dare Ya
It speaks volumes over how annoying Nebby’s habit of escaping the bag was that the creator of this meme had to venture into Quentin Tarantino territory to make this point. Those who are aware of Pulp Fiction will no doubt have let out a big laugh at this meme.
It’s the farthest two fandoms could be from one another, but Pokémon and Quentin Tarantino fans will agree that this might be the best way to make Nebby comply for once. Maybe we all need to let out our inner Jules Winnfield once in a while like Lillie did here.
5 Really Enunciating The Point
People tend to enunciate when trying to make clear they are serious about something, and sometimes being nice doesn’t do the trick. We saw how Lillie treated Nebby so sweetly to zero effect, so maybe talking like this would’ve gotten the point across.
Here, Lillie is shown at her wit’s end with Nebby from frequently asking it to get into the bag, to the point that she’s resorted to arguing in detail with it as to why she wants Nebby stowed away.
4 Spongebob Nebby-Pants
One point that people who didn’t buy into Nebby’s cuteness brought up was the question as to why Nebby wasn’t just pushed into bag. Any normal person would be done with Nebby’s frequent escapes and resort to physically push it.
After all, asking Nebby to get in the bag clearly never worked for Lillie, so being a little forceful might have done the trick and made Nebby understand why things were serious. It appears even Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants was smarter than Lillie.
3 Existential Crisis
Here’s something to think about. What would Lillie’s character be like if she didn’t have Nebby to frequently stuff into her bag? Those who aren’t familiar with the Pokémon games only know her for this meme, so taking Nebby away might bring forward an existential crisis.
This meme certainly seems to suggest that, since taking Nebby away makes Lillie question why she’s getting the urge to put something in her bag. The joke mainly is that Lillie doesn’t serve much purpose without Nebbie. Perhaps we should appreciate Nebby more for making Lillie relevant.
2 PPAP With Nebby
Remember that one funny video with the guy obsessed with pen and apples? Here’s a reminder over how big that joke got as Nebby and Lillie are incorporated into it. For some reason, though, the joke ends up being rather appropriate.
In case you didn’t get the joke, the creator of the meme is making the same point that Patrick’s meme did by suggesting Lillie should’ve just put Nebby in the bag herself rather than ask the Pokémon to do it.
1 Truly A Mystery
If you think the greatest battle in gaming is found in the fighting genre, then you better think again because Nebby might be responsible for the greatest clash. We’ve seen Nebby fight off against one bag, but what if we had a lot more in hand?
The person behind this meme has clearly done some kind of math, as they aren’t pitting Nebby against a few bags - they want Nebby to fight against a trillion of them! Forget all the match-ups we’ve seen in the Pokémon world; this is the contest that is big money.
