For a while, Psychic Pokémon were considered the kings and queens of the Pokémon world. The most iconic was Mewtwo, the most powerful moves were Psychic, and they had great resistances to many other types.
Over the years they’ve lost a bit of their thunder, but there are still many fans who love these mystical and powerful creatures. Here are some pieces of fanart from fans who really bring these mental monsters to life.
10 Mew
Pokémon fans everywhere were so convinced lived under a secret truck, Mew was the only Pokémon for a time that could go head to head with Mewtwo and have a chance of winning. Even now after its powers have been curbed and it’s no longer rare, it still holds a special place in fan’s hearts.
Marina Antonazzo does a great job capturing that surreal, cute, but powerful figure in this artwork. It’s the kind of Pokémon that would happily cuddle with you but could just as easily trap you in a bubble and send you flying.
9 Hypno
Hypno is a creepy Pokémon the more you learn about it. Some Pokedex entries state that it puts people to sleep using a pendulum in order to feast on their dreams, others say locking eyes with it will cause you to be hypnotized, and a particularly eerie entry that says it kidnapped a child.
Daniel Reyes captures that eerie and unsettling nature by making Hypno look downright unsettling. Sure it was retconned to be a friendly being that helps patients sleep in hospitals in later games, but longtime fans remember its creepy past too well to be fooled.
8 Necrozma
Necrozma bears a lot of similarities to the Ultra Beasts without truly being one. It’s a hostile Pokémon from another world who is constantly in search of a light source to charge the lasers it shoots off haphazardly, destroying everything in its wake.
Dhrumil Parikh’s artwork shows a Necrozma hovering in the void of the cosmos, the nature of it’s homeworld is unknown, but according to the newer games, it only became a dark and hostile monster after impurities built up in its body while sleeping underground.
7 Unown
Unown is an apt name for this Pokémon considering not much is known about it. Scientists aren’t even sure if they influenced mankind’s language or they evolved to imitate ancient glyphs mankind was writing on walls.
In any case, Kristyglas shows a unique type of Unown in this piece that really depicts the mysterious nature of the Pokémon. Supposedly when two are together an odd power is said to be created, though what this power is or its purpose is unknown.
6 Mewtwo
For a time Mewtwo was the most powerful Pokémon in existence, and some diehard fans still adamantly believe it retains that title thanks to its new Mega forms. In any case, it is a powerful Pokémon with a tragic backstory and a genetically built-in thirst for battle.
Claudio Amoroso does a great job giving Mewtwo a bit of realism while still retaining that raw intensity and otherworldly Psychic power. This thing is a fighting machine and as long as fans love it, it’ll only get stronger.
5 Grumpig
This would seem to a be a strange Pokémon to wield powerful psychic powers, but you’d be a fool to underestimate it. Grumpigs are said to use the strange black pearls on their body to enhance and amplify their psychic energies to render their foes powerless and take over their minds.
Lucia’s artwork keeps that cartoony nature Pokémon have while showing off some of Grumpig’s potential. Unfortunately for this creature, the black pearls are highly valued in art pieces, though it’s likely to give poachers a rough time.
4 Espeon
Espeon is the Psychic evolution of Eevee which occurs thanks to a high level of friendship or via a Sun Shard. The psychic energies flowing through this creature have given it the unique ability to sense an opponent’s actions and react before they’ve even happened, making it a fierce fighter in battle.
RadonKalmor does admittedly make Espeon look a little eerie, but it’s entirely understandable. It’s a fox-like creature that can sense the future with its fur and is fiercely loyal to trainers it deems worthy of its devotion.
3 Deoxys
The concept of aliens is not new to the Pokémon franchise thanks to creatures like Clefairy, but Deoxys is an entirely new breed of alien that is a major threat to mankind. It’s said to originate from the DNA of a space virus that mutated when it was exposed to a laser beam. It has a vast intelligence, wields incredible powers, and can change its form to gain an advantage in combat.
RenePolumorfous depicts this creature in the midst of an invasion with its transformed brethren. It would take quite an army to resist the hostile intentions of a group of Deoxys.
2 Lunala
Lunala is a Psychic/Ghost-type that devours light to feed itself. As if that wasn’t eerie enough, it has a third eye that when activated allows it to transport to other worlds, probably to continue feeding or return to its roost. Also consider that it has the power to draw other life-forms and strange powers to the world it’s in through wormholes connecting various universes together.
Stefano Puddu does this nightmarish creature justice by showing it using it’s powers to either draw light in, obliterate some unseen foe, or draw unholy powers and entities to the Pokémon world.
1 Alakazam
Alakazam is a creature with a brain of infinite potential. It’s constantly creating new brain cells which causes its head to grow exponentially. As a result of these constantly multiplying brain cells it has a perfect memory of everything it’s ever encountered or learned and has an IQ of 5,000.
Argus Del Norte shows the eerie potential Alakazam has when tapping into this vast reservoir of intellect and psychic ability. It’s unclear what’s more terrifying, what happens when this Pokémon obtains a greater level of sentience and comes to rival humans? Or what if it already has and is merely allowing humans to believe they have control over it for some unknown reason?
