The next Pokemon game now how a release date, but it’s not Pokemon Sword or Pokemon Shield. Upcoming mobile game Pokemon Masters now has a confirmed release date of August 29th on both iOS and Android. Pokemon Masters is already available in three other countries, including India, Indonesia, and Singapore, but this will be the first time the game is available in the West.

While Pokemon Masters may not have as much excitement behind it as Pokemon GO, it’s bound to be highly anticipated. During its run overseas, Pokemon Masters also goes out of its way to capitalize on nostalgia for the Pokemon franchise, something Pokemon GO doesn’t do. While that may make Pokemon Masters less approachable, it appeals to a core audience of Pokemon fans.

Pokemon Masters is a strategy RPG built around 3-on-3 real-time battles against AI opponents. Pokemon trainers from across the in-game world have gathered to compete in the Pokemon Masters League. Each trainer has a single Pokemon that they’ve brought, forming a Sync Pair. The player, with their Pikachu, then partner with two other trainers’ Sync Pairs. They’ll have to battle to earn PML badges first, but then will be able to compete in the PML themselves.

The main attraction of Pokemon Masters is the variety of other “Masters” that the player can partner with. To form their team of 3, players can choose to join the team of trainers including Rosa and her Snivy, or Brock and his Onix. Through the Pokemon Masters journey, players will meet new trainers to partner with, raise the levels of their trainer companions, experience the Pokemon Masters story for themselves.

Pokemon Masters is the first game to come to fruition from the partnership formed between The Pokemon Company and Japanese mobile game developer DeNA. DeNA is known for co-developing many of Nintendo’s mobile game efforts including Fire Emblem Heroes, Super Mario Run, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Pokemon Masters is just the latest title to be developed by this veteran mobile game studio.
