Sony is starting off 2020 with a bang. For PlayStation Plus subscribers, the free games on other this month will be Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Goat Simulator. That’s kind of an odd pairing, but you really can’t deny the value here. Uncharted has sort of been bettered by a lot of more recent shooters (including the PS4’s own Uncharted 4), but the PS3 trilogy remains impressive for what developer Naughty Dog was able to pull off just a decade ago.
Uncharted 2, in particular, is an expertly paced adventure that has a ton of memorable set-pieces and charming characters. It does create a weird atmosphere for its lead being a psychopath -he kills like 1,500 guys and constantly cracks jokes-, but the varied environments and breakneck speed make for a game that can be hard to put down. I guess you’ll also have the other two Uncharted games, as well. They aren’t nearly as good.
Goat Simulator is the oddity here, but even that is worth a play. Mostly a joke game based around the crop of “simulator” games that started to populate Steam in the early 2010’s, Goat Simulator kind of plays like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater if you were a goat. You run around some small sandboxes causing havoc and licking things with your weirdly elastic tongue. It’s a funky game that is bound to entertain you in some way.
I suppose being a compilation package, Uncharted counts as a single game. Sony doesn’t seem to be changing much with how it handles PlayStation Plus for 2020, which is a bit of a shame. With the PS5 launching later this year and us knowing exactly zero about it, this would have been the perfect time to revamp the subscription service and get people jazzed about the future. Imagine getting forward-compatible games for free before launch?
Still, there’s nothing to complain about here. The titles are older, sure, but they are both quality stuff. After all of the incredible experiences last year and how jam packed the beginning of 2020 is, it will be nice to kick back with some oldies to pass the time before March. Both games will be available starting on January 7, so make sure to grab last month’s offerings while you can.
