Big changes are coming to the PlayStation Plus service in 2019. Sony has announced that they will no longer be adding new PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita games to monthly free titles that are given away to subscribers of the service.

Sony has revealed that the PlayStation Plus service will only be adding PlayStation 4 games to the monthly lineup of free titles starting March 8th, 2019. The service will be devoted to just the PlayStation 4 at that point, though they didn’t confirm whether this means that there will be an increase in the amount of PlayStation 4 games given away each month or not.

The announcement clarified that the rest of the service will remain the same and that you will get to keep all of the games that you have acquired through being a PlayStation Plus member, even if they are PlayStation 3/PlayStation Vita titles. You will still have free access to these games for as long as you remain a member of the PlayStation Plus service.

This announcement happened as part of a PlayStation Plus service update, which March 2018’s lineup of amazing free games, which include Bloodborne and Rachet & Clank. There probably wasn’t a better time to make this announcement, as most players will be too happy about free Bloodborne to care.

It’s unlikely that the removal of the PlayStation 3 games from PlayStation Plus will have much of an adverse effect on the player base. This is due to the fact that most PlayStation 3 games can be bought for pennies during the weekly sales. The caliber of the PlayStation 3 games given away on PlayStation Plus hasn’t been particularly high for a while now, with most new titles being cheap indy games that you normally wouldn’t spend more than a dollar on.

This announcement will come as more of a blow to the PlayStation Vita fans, as this feels like another nail in the coffin that deserved much better treatment than it got from Sony. It feels as if Sony has been waiting to cut the Vita off and focus solely on the PlayStation 4 and this announcement is likely the beginning of that process.

No more PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita games will be added to PlayStation Plus as of March 8th, 2019.
