6.4 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold between October and December 2014, helping Sony post a tidy 89bn yen (£500m) profit for the quarter.

The figure represents a huge increase over the 26.4bn yen (£148m) profit posted by the company in the same quarter of 2013.

Looking only at the Game and Network Services division, operating income increased from 12.4bn yen (£69m) in the final quarter of 2013 to 27.6bn yen (£155m) for the recent quarter.

The legs of the PS3 appear to be falling away, however, with the system shifting only 1.1m units compared to 3.3m in the same quarter the prior year.

Looking ahead to the full financial year ending March 31, 2015, Sony forecasts the Game and Network Services division to post an operating income of 40bn yen (£225m) thanks to hardware sales of 17.5m and 420m software sales.
