3 million PlayStation 4 consoles were sold between April-June 2015 – more than twice as many units as Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined.

Only 1.4m Xbox consoles were sold by Microsoft during the same period, 53% fewer than PS4, but 27% up on the prior year. It isn’t known how many of those were Xbox Ones.

It also isn’t clear how many PS3s were sold during the same quarter, although the number is said to be down year-on-year.

Sony’s success has seen it increase its full-year sales projections for PS4 from 16m to 16.5m.

PS4 has consistently outsold Xbox One since launching in 2013, although Microsoft hasn’t provided an update on Xbox One-specific sales figures since November, when it revealed it had shipped close to 10m units.

Sony launched a 1TB PS4 earlier this month, but has not announced an official price cut for the original 500GB model.
