Children can now take their restricted PSN sub accounts with them into adulthood thanks to a new account upgrade system, Sony has announced.

PSN’s sub account system provides adults with an easy way of managing what their children are accessing on the service, such as messages, spending limits and broadcasts.

It had been the case that these sub accounts were locked in this state, meaning it was impossible to transition a child’s PSN account into a regular account without limitations. Thankfully Sony has now implemented a system by which these sub accounts can be upgraded to master accounts.

For now the upgrade can only be carried out on the web, but it will eventually be possible directly on the PS4.

The benefit of upgrading, rather than starting a new master account, is that your profile will be carried over, along with items like your friends list and trophies.

A guide to perform the upgrade can be found here.
