One of the first things you’ll notice about Double Fine’s RAD is the ability to choose your mutation resistant character. However, not all the characters are available from the jump.
In RAD, you play as a young teenage protagonist trying to survive in a world that’s experienced two apocalyptic events. This place is forever stuck in the 80s with its cassette tape currency and floppy disk keys. As the protagonist, you’ve been tasked with exploring toxic wastelands in order to bring power back to your town. In between crazy mutations, neon-colored monsters, and an everchanging terrain, your look is one of the only things you can actually choose.
At the start of the game, you’ll be presented with eight choices for how your protagonist will look. Out of the eight, only four are unlocked from the start. They are Valley Grrl, Jimkata, Thrasher, and Skitch. The other characters are blacked out with just a small preview of their appearances
Unlocking them is simple, in theory. You just have to play through RAD. As you complete more runs, the characters will unlock with time. Each run, whether you win or lose, gives you a certain amount of XP. At first, you’ll get new things like new items and weapons, but eventually, that’ll work its way up to getting characters. However, the challenging nature of the game will make it much harder to rake up those points.
Strangely enough, it seems that unlocking a character doesn’t offer any real perks. The only difference between characters is their aesthetics. There’s no advantage to one character over another. This is good because that means that you can play as anyone without having to consider any real drawbacks. RAD intents for players to rely only on the power of mutations, weapons, and at times, pure luck.
RAD is now available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. You can read more about it here.
