In an interview with CVG, Rare has warmed the hearts of many gamers in their 20’s who grew up with such gems as Battletoads, Killer Instinct, GoldenEye 007, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day. The studio that gave us some of the best games and most iconic characters from the SNES and N64 days is apparently open to licensing more of their titles to 3rd-party developers to be released on platforms such as XBLA.

Speaking about Perfect Dark, which will be hitting the Xbox 360’s download service soon (courtesy of 4J Studios), Rare studio head Mark Betteridge says:

“We know there are a lot of people looking forward to that. There’s nothing to announce yet after Perfect Dark, but we’ve got over 25 years of IP to dip into so there’s no shortage of possibilities.”

I’m honestly surprised I’ve gotten this far because I literally started having a panic attack after typing “Battletoads.” There are few games that illicit an involuntary reaction of pure frustration when just the simple thought of them crosses my mind, but Battletoads and its racing-through-a-disgusting-tunnel-on-some-sort-of-snowmobile-level really hits me in a vulnerable spot of the brain.

Regardless, this is wonderful news. Rare really had some wonderful titles and it’s always a beautiful thing when classic games are allowed to develop a new audience. I certainly know I am interested to see what these youngsters, with their fancy guns from Halo and Modern Warfare 2, think of such classic tools of violence as the laptop gun, FarSight XR 20, RC-P90, and fabled GoldenEye proximity mines. There was a time in my life where I would see those little green lights in my sleep. Aww, the memories.

What about you all? What Rare games would you like to see re-released? What other classic games would you love to also see?
