Christopher Paolini has been on the speculative fiction scene since he published his first novel, Eragon, as a teenager in 2002. The Inheritance Cycle series would go on to sell nearly 40 million copies globally. Nearly 20 years later, Paolini is breaking into the science fiction world with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, his first adult novel. We are very excited to bring you a sneak peak, as part of a serialized excerpt campaign in partnership with Tor.com and The Mary Sue.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is the story of xenobiologist Kira Navárez, who finds an alien relic during a routine survey mission on an uncolonized planet. The relic thrusts Kira into “the wonders and nightmares of first contact.” The book promises “epic space battles for the fate of humanity” that reach to the edge of the galaxy and will change the entire course of history.
