The Reddit community is picking what it considers to be the greatest games of the decade. Although video games have been a big part of pop culture for years, it’s during the 2010s that the medium has gained notable prominence. Esports has taken off and has even begun being televised. The winner of the Fortnite World Cup took home $3 million, showing the world that video games are much bigger than they were in the early 2000s.
Every decade introduces many critically acclaimed video games, so it’s hard to say that the 2010s are the best. However, it wouldn’t be a stretch to claim that this decade of gaming revolutionized the medium. The Elder V Scrolls: Skyrim was released in 2011 and was a phenomenon. The Last of Us, a title some consider to be the greatest game ever made, released in 2013. Meanwhile, 2015 saw the release of Undertale, an indie RPG no one will ever forget. The full version of Minecraft and Fortnite Battle Royale were released during this era, both of which are two of the most popular games ever made.
Over on the Nintendo side of things, this decade saw the conclusion of the Wii, the dead-on-arrival Wii U, and the instant success of the Switch. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild released in 2017, and set a new standard for open-world design. Of course, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the greatest-selling fighting game of all time, released in 2018. Simply put, the decade was massive, and now Reddit is weighing in.
Reddit currently has a thread that is asking people what they consider to be the best games of the 2010s. With over 17,000 comments, the answers vary. Minecraft is a popular pick, and one can find Dark Souls/Dark Souls III, along with The Witcher 3. Mass Effect 2 is also brought up, and Horizon Zero Dawn and NieR: Automata are receiving some love as well, along with Skyrim and Hollow Knight. At least one individual mentioned Garfield Kart, though as with anything regarding that game, the pick was probably sarcastic. There is also at least one mention of Untitled Goose Game.
It’s important to consider why certain games resonated with a lot of people. Minecraft has been popular for years and has a large community of players and modders. Many have sunk thousands of hours into the title. The same applies to Skyrim. Meanwhile, Dark Souls’ high difficulty makes completion extremely rewarding and memorable, more so than many other titles.
It is interesting seeing what everyone considers to be the greatest titles. Since 2019 isn’t even over yet, this means that some new picks could still make it in. Death Stranding, one of the year’s most anticipated games, releases later this week, while Pokémon Sword & Shield sees release next week. Of course, what is sure to be everyone’s pick for best game of 2019 releases this week is Garfield Furious Racing.
