Twitch streamer and former professional League of Legends player Maria “Remilia” Creveling has passed away at the young age of 24. She achieved an impressive esports career, and built a legacy as the first woman to compete in the League of Legends Championship Series. She passed in her sleep, as confirmed by her close friend, esports journalist Richard Lewis.
Maria “Remilia” Creveling entered the professional League of Legends scene in 2013 as Curse Academy’s support player. She continued to build her career in the North American scene, playing as AD carry and support for a number of teams. She joined Misfits in 2015, and the team won the AlphaDraft Challenger League before qualifying for the North American Challenger Series Summer season. Shortly before their NACS debut, the team rebranded as Renegades. With Remilia showcasing her world-class Thresh and Morgana skill, Renegades won the NACS Summer play-offs. Their victory secured them a spot in the upcoming North American League of Legends Championship Series Spring season. Renegades’ LCS debut made Remilia the first woman to compete in the league.
Renegades kicked off the 2016 LCS Spring season with a win over Team Liquid, though struggled to maintain consistent success. Following losses to NRG, Immortals, and Counter Logic Gaming, Remilia decided to step down from the team. She cited anxiety, stress, and self-esteem issues as her motivators for leaving.
After a few months away from professional play, Remilia returned on South American side Kaos Latin Gamers under the name Sakuya. She competed with Kaos for one event, and left the team in January of 2017 due to a paralyzed vocal cord. She returned to the United States in order to undergo surgery for the issue. Later that same month, she joined FlyQuest as a substitute. She departed the organization in November of 2017.
Following her tenure as a professional League of Legends player, Remilia turned her attention to streaming on Twitch. She built a following by streaming her League of Legends gameplay on the platform, though she played other games such as Teamfight Tactics. As a Twitch partner, she streamed regularly to her following of over 90,000.
The cause of Remilia’s death has not been shared publicly, it has only been confirmed that she passed peacefully in her sleep. Her boyfriend spoke on her passing, saying, “she wouldn’t want any lengthy public statement, so all I’ll say is the 4 months I knew her were the best of both our lives and although she deserved so much more, it was a privilege to know her for the short time I did.”
