While The Witcher has been taking Netflix by storm, rumors surrounding a Resident Evil series indicate that the streaming titan will continue its string of hit adaptations. However, despite Netflix’s attempts at secrecy, a Brazilian fan site claims that it has received a leaked synopsis for the upcoming series.
Although several filmmakers have provided their own takes on the popular horror game saga, they have all struggled to faithfully adapt Resident Evil. According to the recent fan reports, Netflix may also be taking creative liberties by using original protagonists in familiar settings and environments from the games.
According to the fan site Resident Evil Database, when Netflix’s Brazilian press office was asked to comment on the series, it sent back an official synopsis detailing the series’ premise. Set 26 years after the games’ T-virus was discovered, the series takes place in Clearfield, Maryland during the early stages of an epidemic. The synopsis also references the infamous Umbrella Corporation, the “now retired” Greenwood Asylum and Washington, D.C. and their cooperation to hide the virus from the public.
Neither Netflix nor the studio behind the series, Constantin Film, have confirmed that the summary is legitimate. Moreover, this has not been the first leak surrounding the series. Previously, another report claimed that this Resident Evil adaptation would center around the two daughters of series antagonist Albert Wesker. When considering both sources of information, the rumored plot and characters seem to align with Constantin Film’s earlier attempts to loosely adapt Resident Evil.
Like the series’ rumors, the previous Resident Evil films centered around a protagonist who never appeared in the video games. However, familiar settings, characters and lore were still referenced. Netflix and Constantin Film may have taken this approach in order to worry less about the restrictions surrounding canon and to appeal to a wider audience.
Even though fans may hope that these Resident Evil rumors are false, they should not worry too much about the new series disrupting canon. Netflix has proven that it can properly use beloved settings from popular franchises to tell new stories with The Witcher. If the new approach to the franchise’s narrative is a success, it could introduce a new wave of fresh fans to the community. And in the worst case scenario, the series will not invalidate the games that came before it.
